Governor Walker’s Valentine for Public Workers

The Governor of Wisconsin has proposed elimination of meaningful collective bargaining rights for public employees, including dues checkoff, the union shop, and limiting negotiations to wages only. On Friday, he announced cancellation of all state contracts as of March 13, and “No negotiations”. Incredibly, he has also announced that he has the Wisconsin National Guard on “standby”!
Working people say “NO”! The battle for human and labor rights in Wisconsin is only one battle, but it is one where working people must be triumphant! In contrast with Egypt where the dictator has been driven from power and democracy is being built, Wisconsin’s Governor is trying to assume dictatorial powers, and is destroying democracy.
Wisconsin is but one of 20 states with a motivated anti-union Republican governor and with a Republican majority in their legislatures. Governor Walker wants Wisconsin to be the template for those who wish to eviscerate the trade union movement.
Make no mistake; the attack on the public sector unions has nothing to do with the budget. The purpose is to drive unions - all unions - out of the political process. The evidence is the elimination of dues checkoff and the requirement for yearly elections in each bargaining unit to maintain certification.
These proposals are designed to disenfranchise working people. They are anti-democratic in content and purpose. Without a functioning trade union movement, there is no democracy.
