Motorcycle crackdown planned

California Highway Patrol personnel are planning a “motorcycle safety enforcement operation” on Highway 41, one of the primary routes to Yosemite National Park, starting Saturday.
May has been designated “Motorcycle Awareness Month” in California, says CHP Officer Josh McConnell.
Starting Saturday there are going to be additional CHP officers from the Madera and Fresno areas on Highway 41 “to reduce the number of motorcycle incidents or collisions resulting from unsafe speed, following too closely, unsafe lane changes, improper turning, and other primary factor collision violations by motorcyclists and other drivers,” McConnell said.
Up and down the Sierra Nevada foothills, residents of the Mother Lode already know local roads including highways 49, 4, 108 and 120 are popular routes for motorcyclists. Any crackdown on motorcyclists on Highway 41 this weekend may prompt some riders to venture farther north into the Mother Lode to avoid extra law enforcement.
The enforcement operation on the 41 is funded by a federal grant and it’s called “Have a Good Ride II.” More motorcycle safety enforcement operations are planned through Sept. 30.
