Workshop will address requirements to operate autonomous vehicles on public roads
The California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) will hold a public workshop on the development of regulations related to the operation of autonomous vehicles.The workshop is scheduled for 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, March 11, 2014 in the Assembly Room (6th floor) at the Department of Motor Vehicles Headquarters Building located at 2415 First Avenue in Sacramento.
This public workshop will provide the public an opportunity to help improve the quality of the regulations that will eventually be adopted for operation of self-driving or autonomous vehicles on California’s public roadways.
The upcoming public workshop will address key questions related to the requirements that would be necessary to operate a self-driving or autonomous vehicle. Other relevant topics that will be covered include whether autonomous vehicles will be operated without a driver, operator knowledge and skills, safety standards, evidence of insurance or bond, and vehicle registration requirements.
The DMV previously held two public workshops and a public hearing on the testing regulations of autonomous vehicles. This upcoming workshop is being held in response to the passage of SB 1298 (Vehicle Code §38750) which requires the Department of Motor Vehicles to adopt regulations in order to test and to operate autonomous vehicles.

In addition to these preliminary public workshops, anyone interested will have the ability to provide comments during the formal regulation process when the DMV publishes the actual proposed text of the regulations.
