Sheriff's office receives $29,638 in Traffic Safety Grants

OTTAWA - Sheriff Jim Beutler announced the Ohio Department of Public Safety's (ODPS) Office of Criminal Justice Services (OCJS) awarded $29,638 in federal traffic safety funding to Putnam County Sheriff's Office for federal fiscal year 2012.
"These funds are essential in ensuring that we are doing everything we possibly can to keep our local community safe," said Sheriff Beutler. "Based on crash data, impaired driving, speed, failure to yield, seat belt usage, and motorcycle safety is a priority for Putnam County and we are pleased to work with our partners at the state level to address this safety issue."
Crash data shows that 37 crashes related to impaired driving, speed and failure to yield caused 22 serious injuries and 17 fatalities in Putnam County, over the three-year period of 2008, 2009 and 2010. To reduce these numbers, the Putnam County Sheriff's Office will be conducting high-visibility enforcement, working overtime hours and holding educational and awareness events with the grant funds. "We are working with the Putnam County Safe Community partners in educating the public to help make our roadways safer."
The funds are passed through OCJS from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to support the efforts of safety partners statewide and focus on traffic safety priority areas such as restraint use, impaired driving, motorcycle safety ad youthful drivers.
