Redding Police Chief: Officers Beefing Up Security at "Big Bike Weekend"

OFF THE WIRE
Thousands of bikers from all over the region are traveling to Redding this weekend for “Big Bike Weekend.”

In light of a recent shooting at a motorcycle festival in Reno, Redding police are beefing up security around town to keep the event family friendly.

Redding Police Chief Peter Hansen says officials from RPD and 8 other Northstate law enforcement agencies will be in town to help patrol the event.

“Typically, it’s been a family-friendly event and that’s exactly how we want it to stay,” said Chief Hansen.

Just a few weeks ago, three people were shot in Sparks, Nevada, during a gang-related shooting at a motorcycle festival. As a result, law enforcement agencies made an effort to raid several outlaw motorcycle gangs across California and Nevada.

“What we want is a strong law enforcement presence in our community to prevent something from happening,” said Chief Hansen. “We’ll be ready if anything does happen.”

“Big Bike Weekend” runs until Sunday night.
