Sgt. Rick Miller of the South Dakota Highway Patrol said that thousands of motorists and motorcyclists can drive in the same conditions over the same road in the Black Hills without mishap. Black Hills highways have steep embankments, trees and rocks lining the ditches and wildlife, which can cause loss of control of vehicles and crashes

"Please, be aware of the traffic in front of you as well as your surroundings," he said.

•William Scott Wilson, Plymouth, Minn., died of his injuries after losing control of his 2002 Buell motorcycle Tuesday and striking the rear of a golf cart inside the Glencoe CampResort. Wilson, 47, was not wearing a helmet and alcohol was believed to have been involved, patrol said.
•Brian Campbell, 37, and Wayne Sanderson, 39, both of Hillsboro, Ore., Michael Thomas Jr., 47, Midway, Ariz., and Michael E. Youngs, 53, Manitou Springs, Colo., were involved in a four-motorcycle pile up on S.D. Highway 79 near Sturgis. Sanderson stopped in the southbound lane to make a left-hand turn into the Iron Horse Campground. Campbell attempted to stop, but struck the motorcycle. The crash went into the northbound lane involving Thomas and Youngs. All received non-life-threatening injuries. Campbell was charged with DUI, according to patrol.
•Cathie Angerman, 57, Wrangell, Alaska, riding her 2005 Harley-Davidson Fatboy, struck Ronald Sharp, 64, Craig, Alaska, on his 2010 Harley-Davidson Ultra Classic as they traveled east on Interstate 90 near Whitewood. Angerman received non-life-threatening injuries. She was transported by ambulance to Spearfish Regional Hospital. Angerman was cited for following too closely, patrol said.
•Michael Baranik, 66, and his wife, Fortunette Baranik, both of Lake Isabella, Calif., were injured while test-driving a 2011 Harley-Davidson trike on Whitewood Service Road west of Sturgis. Michael Baranik lost control of the motorcycle and struck a parked 1968 Ford Thunderbird. The couple was transported to Sturgis Regional Hospital.
•Loren Piper, 54, and Becky Piper, 54, were injured when Loren Piper, driving her 2005 Honda motorcycle south on Nemo Road, failed to negotiate a left-hand curve, left the highway and rolled north of Norris Peak Road. Both were ejected from the motorcycle. They were transported to Rapid City Regional Hospital.
•Thomas Mark Whalen, 62, Oakdale, Minn., received non-life-threatening injuries when he lost control of his motorcycle while driving west on U.S. Highway 14A toward Deadwood. Whalen entered a curve, lost control and tipped his bike over, sliding across his lane into oncoming traffic. He collided with a 2007 Yamaha driven by Lloyd Strasser, 58, of Chester, Va. Strasser and his passenger were transported to Sturgis Regional Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Whalen was transported to Rapid City Regional Hospital. He was ticketed for careless driving.
