Vancouver police's gang squad plans to crack down on the Hells Angels after the president of the East End Chapter did nothing to curtail the activities of a renegade member.

Inspect. Brad Desmarais, who leads the squad, said Juel Ross Stanton, 41, is a proud member of the Hells Angels — so proud that Stanton has no hesitation publicly displaying club clothing and club tattoos to threaten people.

"He apparently has no inhibition whatsoever showing those tattoos to citizens in circumstances which could only be described as highly intimidating," said Desmarais.

Stanton appeared in court in Vancouver on Monday for a bail hearing on several assault and weapons charges stemming from a recent incident at the Ivanhoe Hotel.

He was granted bail for $75,000, with 21 conditions that included covering his tattoos in public and not associating with other Hells Angels, except for his son.

Stanton's behavior was the subject of an unusual meeting between police and the Hells Angels East End chapter two months ago, said Desmarais.

"We felt it was reasonable that we approach the president of that organization and say, 'Hey, look at what this guy's doing. What are you going to do about it?'" he said.

The gang was unable to rein in Stanton, and as a result, the police gang squad plans to pay closer attention to the gang's activities, said Desmarais.

"The club should bear some responsibility for Mr. Stanton's actions," he said.

"We are therefore serving notice today to the Hells Angels that this level of violence will not be tolerated. And we will be examining our current and future enforcement options with respect to the East End chapter of the Hells Angels."
