My commentary to the article about national mandatory helmet law

From my friend Betsy, READ ON
Preceding the article under special announcements... regarding the proposed national mandatory helmet law, being posted in today's bikerbits.

Feel free to use it as you see fit, and pass along to others you feel may benefit!
Thanks~

For the record, I am against mandatory helmet laws, always have been! What is it about this band aid approach that legislators can't let go of? Has a band aid approach ever worked to quell an open gushing wound? No!
I for one am tired of my rights being yanked out from underneath me without my say! This truly is legislation without representation!
And why is it that when safety, education and awareness has proven itself to be a phenomenal way to lower accidents, injuries and/or deaths, that legislators still pilfer our Safety Funds, and turn their backs to us? But then will legislate mandatory helmet laws as a way to save us!! It's not us we need to be saved from! It's the cagers that aren't even aware in most cases that a motorcycle IS a motor vehicle and HAS THE RIGHT TO SHARE THE ROAD!
Where's the education? Where's our money? It mostly comes from our pockets and is earmarked for our use; so leave it alone and let it be used for what it's intended!
Nowhere else in society would an unproven piece of safety equipment be "legislated" as mandatory equipment, yet when it comes to motorcycling it seems to be the case! Less than 7% of all manufactured helmets have been tested in the past 10 years, and those that have been tested have only been tested up to 15MPH!! How often while we're cruising, are we maintaining that speed? Not very often! And if helmets fail, why is it that manufacturers are not held accountable?
Is this not the most ludicrous thinking?
C'Mon people.... if you don't speak up for your rights, you're going to lose them! The time is now to rally against this legislation. It's bad enough we see it in the states; but now to deal with it on a national level, is far more serious and carriers more consequences, and the loss of more rights!
SPEAK NOW.... or forever hold your peace! Contact your legislators, let them know how you feel!
Here's a place to start: http://www.votesmart.org/ Another would be to Google your state's government website, and do a search there. The TIME IS NOW!
