The conclusion of a high-speed pursuit with a motorcycle in Arkansas is steeped in confusion and irony.
How a high-speed ended between Gregory Wallace, 22, riding a Suzuki Hayabusa and an Arkansas State Trooper morbidly answers the question of the worst way to stop a police pursuit; ‘With an ambulance’.
Starting on Interstate 40, the high-speed pursuit brought together State and local police as the chase rode into what has been described as a ‘high traffic area’.
With witnesses estimating a variety of speeds, all seem to agree Wallace was going too fast for an oncoming ambulance to react when the rider pulled into its path at a busy intersection.
Officials are saying the motorcyclist was over the yellow line in the oncoming lane when it struck the front of the ambulance. Reportedly, the impact was significant enough to bend the front subframe of the ambulance a few inches.
Accident scene specialists have said it appears the motorcycle must have been travelling “well over” the speed limit at the time of impact to have caused such damage.
After striking the vehicle and landing in a nearby parking lot, the ambulance crew came to the rider’s aid and attended to his injuries. The rider was taken by air ambulance to a nearby hospital where he was listed Friday afternoon in critical condition.
There is confusion over why the rider would lead police on a high-speed pursuit. Police have acknowledged Wallace has no outstanding warrants, his motorcycle was registered properly and was only purchased last week.
The investigation into the matter is ongoing.
