CA - Governor Brown Signs "Bathroom Bill" Into Law

OFF THE WIRE
Alexander Scheer (916) 319-2133
SACRAMENTO – Assembly Bill 1266, Assemblyman Tom Ammiano's "bathroom bill",  has now been signed into law by Governor Jerry Brown.

AB 1266 requires that a student be permitted to participate in sex-segregated school programs and activities, including athletic teams and competitions, and use restrooms consistent with his or her “gender identity”, irrespective of the gender listed on the pupil’s records.

“Governor Brown's signature on AB 1266 will not, as stated by its author, fulfill the promise that all men are created equal,” Assemblyman Donnelly said. “Instead it will put at risk the right of privacy of every other student, and will open our state to unlimited liability.”

“If the previous assaults on family and traditional values, perpetuated by our legislature on public schools, was not reason enough to pull your kids out, the violation of your child's privacy under AB 1266 might be. This could result in a whole new exodus of students to private or home schooling, hurting public school funding.”

“Students’ most intimate moments are not an appropriate place to conduct social experiments, and AB 1266 will not make California schools a safer place for students.  I am disapointed that Governor Brown did not stand up for California's students and veto this ill-conceived legislation."
