Biketoberfest 2012: Let the Good Times Roll

OFF THE WIRE

In some places, people mark the change of seasons by noting falling leaves, or budding plants in the spring. In the Daytona area, it's the arrival of country artist David Allan Coe.

Coe has been a fixture at area biker festivals — Bike Week in March, Biketoberfest in October — for more than 30 years. He's back again this Biketoberfest for a run of concerts at the Iron Horse Saloon.
The 20th annual Biketoberfest officially runs today through Sunday at various venues in Volusia and Flagler counties. The festival will include live music, biker parties, motorcycle expos, demo rides and more.
Though Coe never got the press that went to Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson, many historians agree with Coe's assessment that he was a part of country music's "outlaw" movement in the 1970s — music that was considerably more gritty than the "country-politan" stuff frequently churned out in Nashville.
Coe earned his accolades by penning such stone-hard country classics (and veritable biker anthems) as "Cheap Thrills" and "Need a Little Time Off for Bad Behavior." He also wrote the boogie-propelled "Son of the South," "Would You Lay With Me (in a Field of Stone)" and "Take This Job and Shove It" (which Johnny Paycheck turned into his signature song).
Coe wasn't just an outlaw in his music — he's also a former member of the Outlaws Motorcycle Club. However, Coe not only left the Outlaws long ago, he also stopped riding bikes many years ago due to his health, he has said.
Coe will perform at 10 p.m. today, 3 p.m. Friday, 10 p.m. Saturday and 5 p.m. Sunday at the Iron Horse Saloon, 1068 N. U.S. 1, Ormond Beach. Admission is free. Information: 386-676-1550.
Coe isn't the only music happening this Biketoberfest. Metal band Quiet Riot will perform Friday on the outdoor stage of the No Name Saloon, 2001 S. Ridgewood Ave., Edgewater. Opening bands begin at 5 p.m. Admission is free. Information: 386-428-9229.
The hard rock band Warrant will be in concert at 9 p.m. Friday at the Iron Horse Saloon. Admission is free.
