REGION ---- Authorities are planning to crack down on distracted drivers with "zero-tolerance" traffic enforcement next week throughout the county, the San Diego County Sheriff's Department announced Friday.
The tough enforcement is slated to begin Monday and continue through Friday, Lt. David Gilmore said.
Sheriff's deputies and California Highway Patrol officers will be looking for people who are violating laws against texting and using cellphones without hands-free devices while driving, Gilmore said.
Gilmore said violating hands-free or no-texting laws costs at least $159 for a first offense, and $279 or more for subsequent violations.
