In the recent effort to crack down on the corruption within the sheriff’s department, a deputy was caught smuggling narcotics into a courthouse jail. His method was unconventional, to say the least, as the drugs were found tightly wrapped in a bean-and-cheese burrito.
According to the LA Times, sheriff deputy Henry Marin, 27, accepted a burrito from an unnamed woman while on duty at the courthouse in February 2010. The burrito was hiding heroin that Marin intended on selling to the courthouse jail inmates.
This past Wednesday, Marin pleaded ‘not guilty’ to the charges of smuggling the drugs into the jail and conspiracy to commit a crime. He was released on $25,000 bail and has a scheduled pre-trial hearing on February 16th.
The sheriff’s spokesperson, Steve Whitmore, told the LA Times that “this kind of behavior is absolutely inexcusable for anybody, especially a law enforcement representative.”
Though his method was unique, Marin is one in a handful of sheriff employees recently accused of smuggling contraband and contributing to the drug trade within jails.
