GENESEE COUNTY (WJRT) -- This week, bikers will rally in Lansing in support of legislation aimed at ending the state's 42-year-old helmet law.
The 'Freedom Rally' will take place on Wednesday. If groups like ABATE of Michigan have their way, the helmet law would be history. But changing the rules of the road won't be easy.
The most recent attempts to allow bikers to ride without a helmet were vetoed by former Michigan's former govenor, Jennifer Granholm.
Right now there are two new bills winding their way through the legislature.
One would allow bikers 21 and older to ride helmet-free as long as they carry at least $20,000 in personal liability insurance. The second would apply to riders 20 and older who have passed a safety course or have had a motorcycle endorsement on their license for the last two years.
Supporters of the bills believe it should be a rider's choice and believe repealing the law would increase tourism in the state. Opponents say it's a safety issue.
Here in Mid-Michigan, reaction is mixed.
Some of our Facebook friends also had things to say about the issue.
Cam tells us "I wouldn't be alive right now if it wasn't for my helmet. They should be required."
Linda has a different take.
She says "let the individual make his or her own choice."
Cathy also weighed in, adding "keep it a law, make it a national law."
