Several hundred bikers gathered at the Capitol on Wednesday to protest the state's helmet law, and rally leaders acknowledged their hopes of change likely rest with Republican Gov. Rick Snyder .
After all, the Legislature has repealed the mandatory helmet law before, only to have the bill vetoed by former Gov. Jennifer Granholm .
Vince Consiglio of Milford, president of ABATE of Michigan Inc., the group pushing for the change, said he has met with Snyder to discuss the issue. "We're working with the governor; we've met some of his concerns," Consiglio said.
Secretary of State Ruth Johnson recently posed for photographs riding a Harley-Davidson, but Consiglio doesn't exactly have a kindred spirit in Snyder.
"Sue won't let me on a motorcycle, let alone let our kids on a motorcycle," Snyder told reporters Wednesday, referring to first lady Sue Snyder .
Still, Snyder said he hadn't decided whether he will veto the helmet law repeal, assuming it is approved by the Legislature.
"I want to look at the costs to all citizens in our state," he said. "There are studies on both sides of the question."
