EU To Propose Motorcycle Safety, Emissions Standards--Draft The European Commission will propose new rules to increase the safety of motorcycles on Monday, while at the same time setting a dateline to reduce their toxic emissions, according to a draft document seen by Dow Jones Newswires Thursday.
According to the document, motorcycle makers will have to install advanced braking systems on all new medium and high-performance bikes, while all vehicles will need automatic switches turning headlights on.
Safety and toxic emissions are the main weak points of the motor bike sector, which includes products as different as mopeds, 250-kilometer per hour motor-bikes, three wheelers and certain mini cars.
The Commission will propose three steps to cut gradually toxic emissions--such as hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide and volatile particles--starting in 2014 to end in 2020, the document shows.
"This staggered approach with each time more severe emission limits targets to address the disproportionately high share of toxic emissions emitted...in comparison to all road transport emissions," the document reads.
The draft also shows that the commission, the European Union's executive body, will propose to increase supervision of the motorcycle market to make sure competition is fair and to prevent vehicles without the necessary safety or environmental requirements from going on sale.
