The Riverside Police Department has scheduled a Motorcycle Safety Enforcement Operation on June 19, to crack down on traffic violations made by motorcyclists and other vehicle drivers.
Motorcycle fatalities have been rising in California. From 2004 to 2008, Riverside County totaled 142 fatalities and 2,520 injuries from motorcycle crashes.
Factors that contribute to motorcycle crashes include speeding and impaired judgment caused by alcohol and drug use by motorcyclists. Motorists sometimes fail to watch out for motorcycles, especially when turning and changing lanes.
Another major factor is inexperience. Many people ride motorcycles without the proper motorcycle license and without the necessary safety skills. This is especially a problem among younger riders, ages 16-24, according to the Riverside Police Department. All riders are encouraged to seek training and safety information.
