Loud motorcycles nuisance for many

OFF THE WIRE

The Edmonton Police Commission has passed a bylaw amendment that will allow officers to ticket any motorcycle noisier than 92 decibels when idling -- roughly to the sound of a lawn mower.
A $250 ticket will issued to the offending rider, in an attempt to cut down on noise pollution. Edmonton's bylaw is the first of its kind in Canada.
And Winnipeg has shown interest in enacting a bylaw of its own, meaning other jurisdictions will likely start gearing up for their own examination of a bylaw against noisy bikers.
While lower sound levels might be good for residents, some motorcycle enthusiasts told the Winnipeg Free Press that they are less than pleased.
Some even suggest that the loud pipes are a safety factor for motorcycle riders, as it alerts other motorists of their presence.
However, for many non-enthusiasts, the blasts of noise from the passing bikes is just an annoyance.
