The Utah Senate advanced a bill Thursday that would allow dirt bikers and off-road-vehicle drivers to attach a flag to their helmets instead of on a long pole on their vehicles when riding on sand dunes where such flags are required.
Those using some Utah dunes must have a pole that hoists a safety flag at least 8 feet from the ground.
Sen. Brent Goodfellow, D-West Valley City, said those long poles sometimes hit people in a crowd and are not always visible to other riders because speed causes them to bend back and down.
Goodfellow's bill, SB19, would allow riders to use a flag on an 18-inch helmet pole. It passed its first test in the Senate in a 24-3 vote.
