We have become "STRONG" advocates of this cause and are against any Provincial or City of Bathurst by-law placing any form of ban on loud exhause pipes on motorcycles and would love to be the voice for all of our fellow riders.
We as bikers are tired of being "targeted" and being the subject of so much "negative" attention & (focus) that has been placed on us over the past years. This time it is our apparent loud pipes. Tomorrow our lights, license plates, helmets etc, WE bikers have a "very" short season to enjoy our rides and it seems that the past years those few months have always been surrounded by controversy.
Loud pipes do serve a real purpose and that is, TO BE HEARD. Sure, some may find that noise annoying, but it is honestly "SHORT LIVED" as we (bikes) pass by your home or your vehicle in a matter of seconds, when there are other noises some have to live with on a daily basis all day/night long, yet nothing is said.
Just a "FEW" examples of this are,
- Residents who live by neighboring rail yards, and are subject to constant noise of rail locomotives and changing of rails cars at all houes of the day / night.
- Residents who have neighbors who's pets (dogs) are up barking all hours of the day / night.
- Residents who are subject to loud house & car stereos.
- Residents who are subject to the noise emitted by customized cars (drifters).
- Residents who are neighboring areas like Semi routs where semi trailers gear down for lights (good point here is there are signs posted on the city limits asking truckers not to use their engine retarder brakes because of the noise they emit). Yet many truckers do it.
- Residents who live along flight paths to our city airport, having to listen to commercial plances landing & taking off all day long 7 days a week.
- Residents who's neighbors operate gas powered lawn / hedge trimmers & lawnmowers.
- Residents who are subject to neighbors who are conducting building projects (hammering, sawing etc) that go from sun up to sun down.
And the list can go on, yet, nothing is ever said or few complaints are raised to this kind of scale about these constant annoying noises that residents of our city have contend with. YET- when a bike drives by your home or vehicle for the short 3 to 4 seconds, "SOME" residents get in and uproar and make a major issue over it, and comes to this.
The key point here is, "PEOPLE DO HEAR US", and that is what we bikers want, not to say, "Oh, look at me, I am driving a nice shiny Harley", we simply "NEED" people to know we are around them when operating a vehicle. Too many of us riders have been involved in or nearly involved in accidents (or have lost friends) with other motorist simply because,"I never saw them" being the most common excuse of other motorists.Withlouder pipes, they now should be able to hear us.
What people fail to realize, is that we Bikers, deserve to be on the road just as much as the other motorists. They only difference here is other motorists have 4 wheels, we have 2. What is a bump / collision with motorists with 4 wheels is usually that a "bump". A "bump" to a motorcyclist could be fatal!!!
WE NEED PEOPLE TO BE AWARE OF OUR PRESENCE.
Now, some can ruin it for others by "gunning" their bikes off the line at intersections, lights etc, this I would refer to unnecessary noise, and for that there already exists a bylaw for "EXCESSIVE NOISE". This is an ESTABLISHED by-law that encompasses "ALL TYPES OF NOISE" including bikes, cars, stereos etc. so our point is, why not stick to existing law(s) THAT DO NOT DISCRIMINATE!!!!!
Please leave us bikers alone, and allow us to enjoy what short season we have to ride our bikes. Concentrate on more necessary topics that deserve the attention of our City Council.
