USA - Requirements for a Concealed Weapon Permit...

OFF THE WIRE
Concealed weapons may be carried in most states with the proper permit.
  • The U.S. Constitution affirms the right of every law abiding citizen to keep and bear arms. Each state has the right and responsibility to regulate how firearms are to be handled within their jurisdiction. Most states have concealed weapons permit laws that allow qualified citizens to carry firearms in public. While each state has its own laws, there are a number of common requirements that must be met before a license will be issued.
  • Age, Most states require that concealed weapons be issued only to people of 21 years of age or older.
  • Law Abiding Citizen, Citizens who have been charged with a serious crime or convicted of a crime that carries a prison sentence are commonly prohibited from obtaining a concealed weapons permit.
  • Drug Addiction, People who are addicted to or are users of illegal drugs are not permitted to obtain a concealed weapons permit.
  • Dishonorable Discharge, People who have been dishonorably discharged from the U.S. armed forces are barred from obtaining a permit.
  • Restraining Order, People who are the subject of a restraining order that prohibits them from harassing, stalking or threatening another are not eligible for a carry permit.
  • Suspended Sentence, People who have received a suspended sentence or a withheld judgment for a crime that would otherwise prohibit issuance of a concealed carry permit are not eligible.
  • Firearms Training, Many states require attendance of an accredited firearms training course. This requirement varies by state but may include live fire training in addition to a classroom session.
  • Background Check, Many states require a criminal background check before a license will be issued. Typically this involved fingerprinting and a fee followed by a waiting period.
  • Payment of Fees, Most states require a fee for issuance of a permit. The amount of the fee is determined on a state by state basis.
  • Valid Identification, A valid state issued identification card or a U.S. passport is typically required to verify your identity before a concealed carry permit will be issued.
