Police officers in Philadelphia have been arrested for allegedly robbing a drug dealer who turned out to be an undercover agent.
According to FOX29, officers and patrol partners, Sean Alivera and Christopher Luciano, detained and robbed an undercover state drug agent posing as a drug dealer in the city's gritty Kensington neighborhood.
Both officers have been charged with conspiracy, kidnapping, robbery, unlawful restraint and false imprisonment after they allegedly stole 20 pounds of marijuana worth $24,000 and $3,000 cash from the undercover agent.
Authorities said in a press release that they believe that Alivera, a 10 year vet, and Luciano, who had 3 years on duty, planned to have the drugs re-distributed on the street by a dealer.
"The swift and joint action by the D.A.'s office, the Police Department and the Bureau of Narcotics Investigations shows that any illegal activity in Philadelphia is our top priority,” District Attorney Seth Williams said in a news release. “No matter who is responsible, we will find you and arrest you. These two men are a disgrace to their badges, but they should not reflect on the hard working men and women in the police department. The defendants are now where they belong, behind bars and their arrests should serve as another warning to criminals on our streets, we will use every resource available to catch you and lock you up."
Police would not say if they used their service weapons in the alleged heist, as some colleagues have allegedly done this year, but states that the officers were not charged with any gun offenses.
"This effort to root out corruption may get worse before it gets better," Police Commissioner Charles Ramsey said Tuesday. "(But) you wouldn't have to clean the house if the house wasn't dirty."
Police Commissioner Charles Ramsey states that the two men have been suspended for 30 days with the intent to dismiss.
The recent arrests of Alivera and Luciano make a total of at least seven Philadelphia officers that have been accused or convicted in the past year of trying to rob drug dealers, sometimes in violent, premeditated home invasions.
An eighth is charged with stealing $825 from a tavern where a colleague was slain on duty four years ago.
