Washington HB2511 - Addressing Motorcycle Profiling

OFF THE WIRE
Although it is not in my B.O.L.T. capacity, I have been working a bill as the ABATE of Washington Legislative Affairs Officer and in coalition with the US Defenders of Washington.

On Feb 2nd, 2010, the bill was heard in the House Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness committee, and was Majority do Pass by a 7 to 1 vote. It was then referred to the House Rules committee for 2nd reading.

Today, Feb 11, 2010, the House Rules committee 'pulled' the bill and it is heading for the floor for a vote. The vote is not guaranteed, and the House cutoff date for bills in the house of origin is Feb 16th, 2010.

This is the 3rd go around for this bill. This is the furthest this Bill has gotten during any previous session.

If any of you would like to help the cause, you can go to: leg.wa.gov website and write to any and all representatives and tell ask them to support HB2511 by voting YES!

I will keep you up to date on the progress, but this single Law Enforcement action of stopping motorcyclist for a civil traffic infraction, in order to gather information about 'suspected' criminal activity of motorcyclist has to be stopped. It is not unlike racial profiling that the Washington State legislature passed a very similar bill about in 2002.
