FBI Fabricated Fake Terrorism Emergencies To Obtain Americans Phone Records!

On Tuesday January 19th, the Washington Post reported the FBI faked terrorism emergencies to illegally obtain more than 2, 000 U.S. telephone records between 2002 and 2006.

FBI general counsel Valerie Caponi told the Washington Post that the FBI technically violated the Electronics Communications Privacy Act when agents invoked nonexistent emergencies to collect records.

This involved the use of an "Exigent Circumstances Letter", a document that allowed a supervisor to declare an emergency and get records and the-after the fact-issue a national security letter detailing the terrorism risk.

The required national security letters were concocted and broad brushed generic phrases like "threats against individuals" and "threats against special events".

Caponi said "we should have stopped those requests from being made that way", calling the abuse of power "a self inflicted wound".

Among those whose records were illegally obtained were Washington Post reporter Ellen Nakashima, and New York Times reporters Raymond Bonner and Jane Perlez.
