Another Winnipeg residence struck by gunfire prompted city police early Thursday to shut down a stretch of a West End street to search for evidence and suspects.
No one was injured when multiple shots were fired at the home in a two-storey, four-unit townhouse in the 1100-block of Ingersoll Street just south of Notre Dame Avenue, and immediately behind a Salisbury House restaurant, about 4:45 a.m.
“There’s a likelihood that it is either going to be gang- or drug-related, or both,” said Winnipeg police spokeswoman Const. Natalie Aitken.
Several nearby residents said they had heard about six gunshots, though police didn’t specify how many were fired.
“We’re very fortunate in this case that with the number of shots fired, no one was struck and no one was injured,” Aitken said.
At least one of the shots left Eddie Cenidoza and his wife Luth with a bullet hole in their front fence, directly across Ingersoll from the home targeted. Police pointed it out to the couple, who had been rattled by the gunfire.
“We were scared to look out the window in case we might get hit with a bullet,” Eddie Cenidoza said.
Luth Cenidoza said she was “shaking in the morning,” to the point that she stayed home from work.
Though members of the city police organized crime unit were at the scene soon after the shooting, Aitken said officers could not confirm the shots as possibly tied to a continuing local war between factions of the Hells Angels and Rock Machine motorcycle gangs, “or any other disputes that are happening within our city.”
Aitken said the shots appeared to have come from outside the residence, causing unspecified damage to the home.
“It’s not known whether or not there was more than one suspect or whether or not a vehicle was being used,” she said.
Police are asking anyone with information on the incident to call investigators at 986-3411 or Crime Stoppers at 786-TIPS (8477).
