HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — A federal judge has upheld Connecticut's gun control law enacted last year following the shooting massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School.
U.S. District Judge Alfred Covello says in his ruling Thursday that the law is constitutional.
Connecticut organizations that support gun rights, pistol permit holders and gun sellers sued Gov. Dannel P. Malloy and other state officials. It asked the court to stop the law from being enforced. The law added more than 100 firearms to the state's assault weapons ban and imposed other restriction.
Covello said the law affects the plaintiffs' Second Amendment rights but is related to the state's interest in public safety and crime control.
A lawyer for the plaintiffs said they will appeal.
Attorney General George Jepsen says the state will continue to defend the law.
