Norwalk sheriff to step up motorcycle safety, DUI
checkpoints this week
By Phillip Zonkel Staff Writer
NORWALK -- The Norwalk Sheriff's Station will increase
enforcement of motorcycle safety and conduct a DUI/driver's license checkpoint
this week.
On Thursday, extra officers from the sheriff's station will
patrol several areas that motorcyclists have frequented and where motorcycle
crashes have occurred, officials said, they wouldn't release the locations.
The officers will be watching for drivers and riders making
violations that can lead to motorcycle crashes, such as speeding or making
illegal turns.
On Friday, extra officers will be deployed throughout the city
from 7 p.m. to 2 a.m. watching for drivers who might be driving under the
influence.
The DUI checkpoint will take place from 7 p.m. Saturday to 2
a.m. Sunday, but the sheriff's station wouldn't release the location.
In 2011, one person was killed and 15 people were injured in
16 motorcycle-related crashes in Norwalk.
Last year, the number of collisions rose to 21, but the number
of fatalities dropped to zero and injuries decreased to 13.
In the past three years, three people have been killed and 84
people injured in 148 DUI-related crashes.
