MOTORCYCLISTS are planning to hold a memorial rally as a tribute to a young rider who died in a crash.
About 100 bikers are expected to join the procession to celebrate the life of Daniel Garbutt.
The 23-year-old, of King Edward Road, Laindon, was well-known on the local motorcycling circuit and a number of biking clubs are planning to take part.
He died after crashing his motorcycle in Fossetts Way, Southend, on April 19.
Bartholomew Simpson, 36, of High Road, Laindon, is a member of Tarmac Terrorists motorcycle club and one of the event organisers.
He said: “The motorbike circuit is like one big family and Daniel was well known and really popular. This will be a good tribute to him.
“When something like this gets into the news everyone starts ringing and texting to check everyone they know is OK. It does make you think about the risks.”
The ride will take place on May 15, starting at Festival Leisure Park, Basildon, between 9am and 10am. British Superbike racer Danny Buchan, who rides for Kawasaki, will start the ride off.
The motorcyclists will travel to Southend and go past the spot Mr Garbutt died at to pay their tributes, before stopping off at the seafront for a coffee.
They will finish at Hanningfield, which was his favourite place to ride.
Mr Simpson said: “We would like any bikes to attend, no matter what size or style of bike, to help make this a proud day for Daniel. We’re hoping about 100 people will take part.”
Mr Garbutt was a member of Essex Bikers and motorcyclists from other local clubs, including Squidgy Banana, are also planning to take part.
People can turn up on the day or call Mr Simpson on 07703 657101 for more information.
