California - The Napa Police Department will be doing special DUI and motorcycle safety enforcement on Saturday.
There will be DUI patrols between 6 p.m. and 2 a.m. in areas with high
frequencies of DUI collisions and/or arrests, police said in a new
release.
Extra officers will also be patrolling areas frequented by motorcyclists. Officers will be looking for violations made by drivers and riders alike, cracking down on those who are speeding, making illegal turns or any other dangerous violation, police said.
Over the course of the past three years, DUI collisions have claimed one life and resulted in 13 injury crashes harming 23 people, police said.
In the city of Napa in 2012, there was one motorcycle fatality and 13 motorcyclists injured in traffic collisions. In 2013, there were no motorcycle fatalities but eight motorcyclists were injured in collisions.
The primary causes of motorcycle-involved crashes include speeding, unsafe turning and impairment due to alcohol and other drugs, police said.
Police are reminding all motorists to always be alert and watch out for motorcycles, especially when turning and changing lanes. Drivers should be aware that motorcycle lane splitting is not illegal if done in a safe and prudent manner.
