PARA-MILITARY SWAT TEAMS in the U.S.

OFF THE WIRE
In a notorious May 5, 2011 raid, an Arizona SWAT Team member prematurely discharged his weapon into the doorway of a home. His team members assumed they were under attack, and began firing in blind panic. They fired 70 rounds in seven seconds into the home, and struck Marine Iraq veteran Jose Guerena SIXTY times in front of his wife and child. Guerena's name wasn't even on the search warrant.

The Pima County Sheriff's Department initially claimed Guerena fired his weapon at the SWAT team. They now acknowledge that not only did he not fire, the safety on his gun was still activated when he was killed. Guerena had no prior criminal record, and the police found nothing illegal in his home. After ushering out his wife and son, the police refused to allow paramedics to access Guerena for more than hour, leaving the young father to bleed to death, alone, in his own home.

Here in the U.S.A., Para-Military Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) teams are terrorizing and killing American citizens. Thousands of combat veterans are also in danger of being killed by their own government. The number of deaths is steadily rising as veterans return home from the war. What's going on?

About thirty years ago, Congress began directing the U.S. military to supply intelligence, equipment and training to civilian police. This has brought about a culture of Para-Military Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) teams taking over the routine duties of traditional law enforcement.

The Para-Military Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) teams are not your regular local community police officers. Because of their training and specialized armament, they have adopted the tactics and mindset of their military mentors. They are certified by Homeland Security and trained by military Special Forces, Navy Seals and Delta Force and funded by our government. The idea was to have a Homeland Security force in place across the country for instant use in a crises. They are trained to handle terrorists taking American hostages or terrorists attacking civilian institutions.

Police departments were saddled with Home Security SWAT teams, special military "Toys," training and budgets provided by the government, and then had no terrorists to practice on. The police department began using SWAT for routine police duties such as serving search and arrest warrants. The aftermath? Many unnecessary deaths, with no end in sight, in communities across America.

Para-Military Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) teams tactics are acceptable when dealing with terrorists or enemies in a foreign country. In a democratic free society, however, the tactics aren't legal or appropriate for community law enforcement.

In America, the actions and values of the police officer are distinctly different from those of the military warrior. The job of a police officer is to keep the peace, and not by just any means. Police officers are expected to apprehend suspected law-breakers while adhering to constitutional procedures. They are expected to use minimum force and common sense to deliver suspects to a court of law.

The soldier/SWAT Team members, on the other hand, are an instrument of war. Military warriors are trained to inflict maximum damage on enemy personnel. The solder is also trained to automatically react without thinking.

Confusing the police function with the military function has lead to dangerous consequences, such as unnecessary deaths and destruction of personal property.

Candid media videos show firsthand how the Para-Military SWAT teams serve search and arrest warrants. In many cases there are innocent people and children inside the targeted building. Yet there is no attempt to notify anyone in the targeted building or identify themselves. Just like the military trained them to do, they fire flash-bang and tear-gas grenades through the windows, blast in the door, and kill anyone who is too stunned or slow to react properly.

When innocent citizens are killed by these teams, there's rarely any in-depth investigation. The killings are always declared "justified shootings." It doesn't matter if they went to the wrong address, or if the victims were innocent of any criminal activity. When the smoke settles, all that matters is fabricating a story to cover up the murders of innocent American citizens and deflect lawsuits.

Further, Para-Military SWAT teams are increasingly responsible for the unnecessary deaths of our veterans. A military combat veteran is trained to automatically respond to a surprise attack. Imagine a highly decorated veteran, or a veteran suffering from PTSD suddenly finding his home and family under attack from unidentified assailants!!! This can only end in tragedy for both military veterans and citizens.

It is truly ironic that our government is training Para-Military SWAT teams to kill military veterans who fought to defend this country.

The training and certification of Para-Military SWAT teams by the government was intended to boost U.S. security during a terrorist attack. Instead, it has become a tangle of wasted resources with little oversight or responsibility for its actions. Over time, it has escalated to being responsible for inexcusable fatalities among American citizens.

The guerrilla warfare approach smacks of some totalitarian third-world regime, not a free democratic society.

In my opinion, the only way to stop the slaughter in our towns is for outraged American citizens to band together and petition their Congressmen and the courts to investigate and stop this gross violation of Constitutional law and basic human rights.
