The following are highlights of the report, which is available at http://www.fbi.gov/. Some of the key findings are:
ª About 1.4 million active street, prison and outlaw motorcycle gang members belong to more than 33,000 gangs throughout the nation. That is a ®40 percent increase from when the previous report was published in 2009.
ª White-collar crimes and prostitution are some less typical crimes that are gaining popularity among gangs.
ª Female gang members are becoming more important within the gang structure — gathering information from visits to prison for the streets, transporting guns, drugs and money, and serving as the get-away driver when crimes are committed.
ª An average of 48 percent of violent crime in a majority of jurisdictions across the nation is attributed to gangs, while some communities report up to 90 percent. Gang violence is seen mostly in major cities and suburban neighborhoods.
