Germany - Hells Angels and Mongols rumble in Germany

The German branch of the Hells Angels motorcycle gang, founded in the US, says that it will challenge any legal bid to ban it across in Germany – as far as the European Court of Justice if necessary. There is no legal basis for such a ban, Frank Hanebuth, president of the Hells Angels in Hannover, told local media. “We will defend ourselves with all legal tools and if necessary take it to the European Court of Justice,” he said.
The Hells Angels and the rival Bandido gang buried the hatchet following May 2010 negotiations, while Hanebuth said the criminalization of the Hells Angels was unfair and that comparisons with the Mafia were completely excessive. “Do we shoot state prosecutors, judges or politicians?” he said. “Do we blow up buildings? Do we deal weapons or tons of cocaine? No! We would never do that.”
Law enforcement in Europe has long sought to ban clubs alleged to be involved in criminal pursuits such as protection rackets, drugs, and prostitution. A 2009 report by Germany's federal police asserted that clubs such as the Hells Angels live by their own rules and do not cooperate with law enforcement. According to the report, the clubs are no strangers to the use of violence, while their "main aim was to increase territorial and financial power."
Adding to law enforcement concerns is the arrival of another club, known as The Mongols, which allegedly attracts violent immigrants as members. Berlin police are predicting violent clashes between Hells Angels and Mongols, following the stabbing of a Mongol on January 24.
