Crash Near Ocotillo Killed 5, Injured 6
SANTEE, Calif. -- A woman injured in a motorcycle crash last month along a desert highway near Ocotillo that killed five people and injured six spoke to 10News on Sunday. Kelly Halley of Santee was one of those riding with the Saddletramps Motorcycle Club on Nov. 13.
"The last thing I remember thinking was what a gorgeous beautiful day this is," said Halley. "I love riding my Harley and this is just awesome."
According to the CHP, the 12 motorcyclists were traveling eastbound on the two-lane Highway 98, west of Mount Signal when the driver of a gold Honda Civic tried to pass the motorcyclists at speeds close to 100 miles per hour. A white Dodge Avenger was traveling westbound and lost control trying to avoid a head-on collision with the gold Honda. The white Dodge crossed over the lanes and slammed into the group of motorcyclists.
Four motorcyclists -- plus the passenger in the Dodge Avenger -- died. Investigators reviewed surveillance video at the Mexican border hoping to find clues about who was driving the gold Honda. So far, no arrests have been made.
"My gut feeling is they'll probably never find him, but I'm a big believer in karma," said Halley. "Something will come around to that person."
Denny "Grizz" Humberstand, vice president of the Saddletramps said, "The only thing I can hope for is that he talked to somebody and turn him in."
Halley must now wear a neck and body brace after her injuries, which include suffering a major concussion, bleeding in the brain, two cracked vertebrae and pain all over her body. It could take up to six months for Halley to recover.
However, she said is thankful she's alive and prays for those who are still recovering.
"I got very lucky and very fortunate," Halley said.
Two of those who are injured are out of the hospital but now must receive care at assisted living facilities. One injured woman is still in a coma.
