Police: Drug Crimes Behind Kuopio Shooting

North Savo police have remanded nine people in custody in connection with Sunday night’s shooting in the eastern town of Kuopio, among them the 26-year-old suspected shooter.
The incident happened in the Petonen district of the city at around 21:15 on Sunday night. The gunman fired two shots at a man, causing the police to put out an official warning that people should stay indoors. The police hunted for the shooter and three others who were with him at the time. One was arrested soon after the shooting, but the others – including the shooter – evaded capture for several hours.
The group assaulted two people as they left the scene. The victims were taken to hospital, but their injuries were not life-threatening.
The police say that the suspected gunman had already threatened the injured party earlier, including through text messages. According to the suspect, the action came as retaliation for an assault a couple of weeks before.
In addition to that, the police say that a third assault, which relates to the collection of drug debts, is part of the same chain of events.
All the victims and the suspects know each other. They are all men aged 20-26 and known to the police. The group also has links to drugs.
The investigation continues on Tuesday, when it will become clear how many will be arrested and on what charges.
The police held a briefing about the shooting on Monday afternoon.
