Police on Vancouver Island are targeting speeders over the Victoria Day weekend, warning that the fines are much greater this year.
Anyone caught doing 41 kilometres an hour or more over the speed limit will have their car towed and impounded for seven days and face a hefty fine between $368 and $483.
On Thursday night, Victoria police seized two cars of drivers who were speeding excessively.
One driver in a Pontiac GT reached 100 kilometres an hour down Blanshard Street near Finlayson Street.
RCMP said they will be out in force on the Island, looking for aggressive drivers who tailgate, ignore signs, run red lights, recklessly pass other vehicles or speed.
For the 2010 May long weekend, RCMP said they caught 20 excessive speeders in their jurisdiction.
Mounties on the Lower Mainland will be using police helicopters and automatic licence plate readers in strategic locations throughout the Lower Mainland to nab bad drivers.
The Victoria and Saanich police departments will be sending out traffic alerts and possible locations of speed traps on their Twitter accounts. Follow @VicPDtraffic and @Saanichpolice.
The RCMP's outlaw motorcycle gang enforcement and intelligence unit will be keeping an eye on Hells Angels gatherings in Campbell River and Kelowna.
Dozens of Hells Angels and fellow bikers converged on Campbell River.
Sgt. Shinder Kirk, spokesman for the Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit, which targets organized crime, said similar gatherings in the past had been uneventful but police still need to make sure the community is safe.
