Off-duty San Diego police officer shoots suspect trying to steal his motorcycle

December 26, 2010
7:42 am An off-duty San Diego police officer shot one of two men Wednesday night who were trying to steal the officer's motorcycle from his apartment in the Nestor neighborhood, police said Thursday.
The officer, identified only as a three-year veteran of the department, discovered two men attempting to put his motorcycle into a minivan about 9:35 p.m. He identified himself as an officer and ordered one man to the ground, police said.
Instead of complying, the suspect fought with the officer and then "turned and placed both hands inside the midsection of his jacket," police said. "Believing the suspect was arming himself, the officer fired his weapon and struck the suspect."
The suspect, Eduardo Gonzalez, 28, was arrested and taken to a hospital for what is described as a non-life-threatening wound. The second suspect disappeared with the minivan and the motorcycle, a black 2008 Yamaha R1.
The police homicide squad is investigating the incident, standard procedure for officer-involved shootings.
