MANSFIELD — Ohio Department of Public Safety’s Ohio Traffic Safety Office has awarded $35,663 to the Mansfield/Ontario/Richland County Health Department to run the Richland County Safe Communities Coalition, a Safe Communities Program.

Competitive grant funds totaling $10.9 million were awarded to projects that target such traffic safety priority areas as restraint use, impaired driving, motorcycle safety and young drivers. In all, Richland County will receive $91,423 from the fund. The rest of Richland County’s award will go to the sheriff’s office for high visibility enforcement overtime.

In the past three years, Ohio road fatalities have decreased to near record lows, according to the Ohio Traffic Safety Office.
