Hackers create Safe Skies TSA master key from scratch, release designs

Hackers (people who hack away at things until they figure them out) have made master copies of the TSA Safer Skies luggage key and distributed the plans on line.
This highlights the issue that we talked about earlier in the year when the government started trying to say that they should have a "master key" to all encryption to protect us from terrorists. Whenever a master key exists, it can be compromised. It would also mean your liberty can be compromised.
 On Saturday evening, during the Eleventh HOPE conference in New York City, three hackers released the final master key used by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), which opens Safe Skies luggage locks.

The talk was given by DarkSim905, a lock enthusiast who heads the New Jersey chapter of TOOOL (The Open Organization of Lockpickers); Nite 0wl, a member of TOOOL from New York City; and Johnny Xmas, of RedLegg International's TradeCraft Labs.
In addition to releasing a 3D-printable model of the Safe Skies master key, the talk also addressed the techniques used to collect the intelligence leading to the compromise of the seven Travel Sentry keys in 2015, as well as vulnerabilities in the Safe Skies lock design.

How to respond to ransomware threats

The public release of this eighth and final key has once again exposed the problems created by key escrow.

Approved Locks:

TSA approved locks became a common sight at airports in 2003. Passengers were using locks to prevent theft, and the TSA wasn't thrilled with the overhead required to inspect baggage. Prior to the creation and availability of approved locks, the TSA would simply cut the lock off if a bag needed inspected. These days, under the approved locks program, the TSA can access bags by using a master key.

Two companies are responsible for the majority of the TSA approved luggage locks on the market.
The first is Travel Sentry, but they don't make their own locks. Travel Sentry authorizes a system of keys that can be used as standards for other lock manufacturers. The second company is Safe Skies. They do make their own locks, and hold the patents for the designs.
When the approved locks program was introduced, some felt the concept was security theater and wouldn’t actually provide additional protection from thieves. But it’s possible some travelers did believe in the concept stronger protection, as the TSA made claims in 2012 that the locks would "prevent anyone from removing items" from locked bags.

 A few years later, the TSA reversed their stance in a statement given to the Intercept, saying the approved lock program was implemented to provide "peace of mind."

When asked for comments concerning the creation of a Safe Skies master key, the TSA sent Salted Hash a similar comment.
"These consumer products are convenience products that have nothing to do with TSA's aviation security regime," an agency spokesperson said.
"Carry on and checked bags are subject to the TSA's electronic screening and manual inspection. In addition, the reported accessibility of keys to unauthorized persons does not affect the physical security of bags while being screening by TSA officers."

Granted, the locks do serve as a deterrent against opportunistic theft, but that's about it. Locked or not, your luggage can be opened with a pen, a knife, or screwdriver in seconds – and most of the more common Travel Sentry or Safe Skies locks can be picked with ease.
But, as Johnny Xmas said during a recent interview with Salted Hash, the point being made isn't about "how bad men can lick your travel toothbrush" after opening your luggage with a printed key.
The point being made by the development and subsequent release of the eighth and final TSA master key centers on the dangers of government key escrow.

Travel Sentry and key escrow:

Testing the security of TSA approved locks is something lock enthusiasts have been working on since 2004.
In late 2015, a hacker who goes by name of Xylit0l, using high-quality public images released by the TSA and published by Travel Sentry, as well as a ton of community-driven research, eventually produced 3D-printable copies of the Travel Sentry master keys.
Later, DarkSim905, Johnny Xmas, and another hacker by the name of MS3FGX, added to the project by fixing a few of the early design flaws and sharing knowledge.

The media coverage related to the Travel Sentry leak primarily focused on the fact that hackers could now break into luggage, which the hackers involved in the leak claimed completely missed the point.
"The point we were trying to make, which everyone involved stated very clearly over and over again, was that this was all an act of civil disobedience in order to create an excellent metaphor for the general public to better understand the inherent dangers of trusting a highly-targeted third-party to have the tools necessary to grant unfettered access to your stuff," Johnny Xmas said.
Around the time the Travel Sentry keys were released, Apple and the FBI were going to war over the FBI's demand that Apple develop a backdoor in their software. The backdoor would allow unrestricted access to the encrypted data on a person's iPhone or iPad, but the FBI claimed they would only use it when legally allowed.
Another way to put it – the FBI wanted Apple to give them a master key that would bypass the security protections on an Apple customer's device, one that would be held in escrow and only used when the FBI felt it necessary. However, no one trusted the FBI's ability to protect such golden keys.
"At its best key escrow creates a larger attack surface and places significant, if not complete, control or your security in the hands of a third-party. How much can you trust that third-party? If they're dishonest or greedy, they can steal your property or access your sensitive information without your knowledge or consent," explained Nite 0wl during a recent interview with Salted Hash.
Even if the third-party is completely honest, Nite 0wl added, "their security must be at least as good as your own or an attacker can get your keys from them instead of attacking your system directly."
Yet, at that point in time, those calling out the parallels between the Travel Sentry keys and the backdoors being sought by the FBI were routinely ignored.
"Security, encryption and protecting communications that many of us security researchers take for granted, are constantly under threat. Just because the average person was forced to share keys to their things (i.e. luggage), doesn't mean we should accept it for our electronic communications as a result," DarkSim905 said.

"The fact an organization with an already questionable history and existence went so far as put all of our travelers' belongings at risk for theft is mind boggling. It should shock anyone who has even vaguely private things or thoughts. People have had a great deal of things stolen from their luggage in recent years due to the abuse of key escrow," DarkSim905 added, referencing reports of valuables being stolen at airports.
As mentioned, when the Travel Sentry story broke, most of the hackers involved felt the media missed the point entirely.
In all fairness, they were right to be frustrated. At no point, did the media contact Johnny Xmas, DarkSim905, Xylit0l, or MS3FGX to get additional details or confirm facts – a major misstep considering there were problems with some of the keys in the first place.
One Tweet made by Johnny Xmas at the time was widely circulated in the media, despite the fact it wasn't truthful.
"I had printed the keys up, confirmed they looked good, and then took that picture while I was out grabbing some dinner. I came home and began testing them, only to find the sizes were way too small," he explained.
Xmas posted a second message to Twitter after some testing, saying that he had the correct scale for the TSA keys. However, this wasn't correct either, as 004 and 006 needed serious work before they could function properly.
"All of this is of particular importance because at no time did anyone publishing these articles ever attempt to get in touch with me. I was making claims lofty enough to attract major media attention, and yet nobody ever attempted to verify the truthfulness of them," Xmas added.

Safe Skies:

The Safe Skies master key released during the Eleventh HOPE conference took some effort to engineer.
According to research, Safe Skies only uses a single master key. Previously, Nite 0wl and the others had high-resolution images and design specs to work with on the Travel Sentry project. This time however, they had no such help, so things had to be done manually.
"Unlike the Travel Sentry keys, there is very little information about the exact design of the Safe Skies key floating around. There are no leaked documents, inadvisable publicity photos, or anything like that. Instead, I had to use more traditional locksmithing techniques to create a working key," Nite 0wl explained.
The first step in his research was to acquire Safe Skies locks for examination and testing. Nite 0wl purchased them from as many different sources as possible to ensure he had a diverse sample set to work with.

The second step was to identify possible key blanks. This stage was helped by examining the user keys that were supplied with some of the Safe Skies locks. Ultimately though, he had to resort to creating his own blanks. While the first set of custom blanks were created with polystyrene sheets, he eventually switched to modifying commercially available key blanks that were similar to actual Safe Skies keys.

"Once I had blank keys that would fit the locks I needed to figure out what the cuts should be," Nite 0wl said.
This stage involved examining and comparing the user keys supplied with the sample locks, since he knew the master key could never exactly match one of the user keys. By doing so, he was able to eliminate those sets of cuts and look for patterns that would give him a rough idea of the pattern a master key would use.
"The big breakthrough was when I acquired several Safe Skies locks that used wafer-tumbler mechanisms instead of pin-tumbler mechanisms, because of the different mechanical design I was able to work out the master key cuts very quickly and then confirm that the key worked on all of the sample locks I had," he added.
The 3D model of the master key being released contains some additional work by Nite 0wl and the others, and it might require some additional tweaks due to the nature of consumer 3D printers, but the key itself is fully functional on Safe Skies locks.

There is one point all three of the speakers wanted to stress during their interview. There was nothing shady or illegal going on during their research. Unlike the Travel Sentry keys, the Safe Skies key was not developed due to leaked photographs, files, or any other proprietary data. This was a manual development project, one that was full of trial and error. But their overall point remains the same – key escrow is a bad idea.

"This was done by legally procuring actual locks, comparing the inner workings, and finding the common denominator. It's a great metaphor for how weak encryption mechanisms are broken - gather enough data, find the pattern, then just "math" out a universal key (or set of keys). What we're doing here is literally cracking physical encryption, and I fear that metaphor isn't going to be properly delivered to the public," Johnny Xmas commented.
Salted Hash reached out to Safe Skies and the TSA for comment. However, only the TSA responded.
Attempts were made to reach Safe Skies prior to publication via phone, email, and LinkedIn, but none were successful.

MRF Vision Zero & The Motorcyclist

For Immediate Release July 22, 2016 Vision Zero & The Motorcyclist WASHINGTON, DC– In the late nineties, Europeans saw a flurry of activity surrounding a new concept referred to as “Vision Zero,” which was intended to achieve a highway system with no (or ‘zero’) fatalities or serious injuries. While the objective behind the concept is certainly admirable, how that has manifested varies from the extreme to the sensible approach. And, with more and more U.S. cities following Europe’s lead by adopting their own versions of “Vision Zero,” the motorcycle community is paying close attention to what the practical effects of this concept could mean for them. Founded on a Simple Principal Guided by the principal that nothing (not money, convenience, or some would argue freedom of choice) can be put before health and safety, Sweden was the first country to adopt the concept into their law. Other countries quickly followed suit including the Norway, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom. While the concept of ‘zero deaths or serious injuries’ remains the objective, it can be implemented in a number of different ways. Sweden focused on reduced speed limits while the Netherlands attempted to put a greater area of separation between automobiles and pedestrians or cyclists. In addition, an emphasis on the design of roads was central to many of the countries implementing new initiatives under the Vision Zero umbrella. Not So Simple Impact on Motorcyclists For motorcyclists in the countries embracing Vision Zero, there were pros and cons to the governments’ execution efforts. In the ‘pro’ column, there was wide consensus that pavement conditions on roadways should be suitable so that bikers could avoid changes in friction including addressing cracks, rough spots, potholes, gravel, etc. The motorcycle community in Europe also voiced opinions over guardrail design and placement and its impact on safety. However, for all motorcyclists, a very prominent checkmark in the ‘minus’ column related to the sentiment expressed by Cales Tingvall, then Director of the Swedish National Road Administration. Tingvall, one of the original creators of Vision Zero, directly addressed motorcycles as they related to the success of the initiative stating that, “We must prevent the recruiting of new motorcyclists. In long-term thinking, I regret to say that motorcycles must go.” Though he later recanted, he went on to make other statements suggesting that motorcycles and Vision Zero could never find a real consensus. Understandably, sentiments like those voiced by one of the key drivers of Vision Zero resulted in serious concern about the future of motorcycling in cities and countries adopting this initiative. Further, during the initial concept building phase for Vision Zero, motorcyclists across Europe, represented by the Federation of European Motorcyclists' Associations (FEMA) worked to ensure that motorcyclists were not restricted nor discriminated against. Alongside FEMA were representatives from the Motorcycle Riders Foundation and other motorcycle rights groups and associations including the broader International Motorcyclist Cooperation Group. The parties worked together to ensure anti-motorcyclist rhetoric was minimized as well worked to defeat a recommendation to remove powered two-wheelers from some traffic patterns, as this had been suggested in previous conversations surrounding Vision Zero. Despite the positive work done on behalf of motorcyclist rights’ groups during the initial Vision Zero planning period, many of the concerns about motorcycle discrimination remain. Jumping the Pond It wasn’t long before proponents of Vision Zero began pushing the initiative in the U.S. In 2014 and 2015, twelve U.S. cities announced their own adaptation of Vision Zero using Sweden as the model. From Los Angeles to New York City and cities in between like Austin and Ft. Lauderdale, initiatives started being announced. While some focused on pedestrian safety and others took a softer approach, other cities, like Seattle for instance, set lofty goals stating that they would achieve Vision Zero by 2030 and take whatever precautions necessary in order to attain the objective. At the time of this writing, it is unclear what, if any, role motorcyclists have in some of the new initiatives popping up in the U.S. Though draconian statements like those spoken by Cales Tingvall have not been repeated yet, some in the motorcycling community that have been following the issue are starting to express apprehension over the growing number of Vision Zero cities and what that might mean for universal helmet laws, high visibility attire and the future of motorcycling itself.   About Motorcycle Riders Foundation The Motorcycle Riders Foundation (MRF) provides leadership at the federal level for states’ motorcyclists’ rights organizations as well as motorcycle clubs and individual riders. Federal Government moving forward to seize club colors

 Washington, DC (July 19, 2016) Federal prosecutors are ramping up efforts to seize the trademarks of Motorcycle Clubs in California and possibly the Midwest in a renewed effort to target the groups “patches” that members wear on their jackets and vests.

A First Amendment obstacle course still could lie ahead, experts warn, as officials go after organizations with names like the “Mongols” and the misspelled “Devils Diciples.”

But in new legal filings, prosecutors are keeping alive tactics begun during the presidency of George W. Bush to try to cripple the groups by seizing their assets.

In a July 11 appellate court filing, prosecutors wrote that “A select group of the gang, so-called ‘full-patched’ members,” had obtained federal trademark protection for “Two marks used by the gang to identify members and to terrorize enemies.” The filing called the Mongols’ registration “An audacious, novel move.”


The two trademarks cover a logo and a name that summon the organization’s identity.

“Gang rules . . . broadly recognize that only full-patched members, that is, the constituents of Mongol Nation, have full authority to use the word and rider images,” prosecutors stated in the new 30-page brief.

The filing with the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit seeks to reinstate an indictment dismissed two years ago by a trial judge. If prosecutors succeed, the Justice Department could eventually secure control of the trademarks associated with Southern California-based Mongols Motorcycle Club.

An attorney for the Mongols was in court Tuesday and could not be reached for comment. A Justice Department spokesman could not be reached.

The government’s appeal in the Mongols’ case is the second this year in which the potential seizure of trademarks has figured in federal efforts to curtail organizations that prosecutors contend are criminal enterprises, not just clubs for like-minded motorcycle enthusiasts.

Six weeks ago, a Michigan-based federal judge issued an order suggesting that trademarks claimed by a motorcycle outfit called the Devils Diciples were fair game, following a wide-ranging indictment  issued in 2012.

In his May 31 order, U.S. District Judge Robert H. Cleland ruled that one of the Devils Diciples’ defendants, who had pleaded guilty, would not be able to contest the potential forfeiture of any of the organization’s trademarks.

But Fritz Clapp, a Beverly Hills, California-based attorney who filed a trademark application for the Devils Diciples, said Tuesday that he was prepared to oppose any federal effort to seize the asset. “It is a subject of controversy,” Clapp said.

Full-patched members of the club identified themselves with patches, tattoos and insignia, including the word and rider images.

Conventional asset forfeiture is a popular tool for law enforcement. Assets worth more than $1.6 billion were deposited in the Justice Department’s Asset Forfeiture Fund during Fiscal 2015, according to the program’s most recent report.

The seized property ran the gamut, from a $1.3 million airplane taken in Denison, Texas, and $1.2 million in currency seized in Miami to $11 million in Bitcoin, the online currency, seized in San Francisco.

Intellectual property, though, has yet to become a common target for law enforcement, and the prospect of the government seizing names and logos raises myriad free-speech issues.


“The majority of Mongols have no criminal record and are not actually accused of anything except being Mongols,” Donald Charles Davis, who blogs under the name The Aging Rebel, said. “It would be both illegal and unfair to deny them of their constitutional rights based on Department of Justice propaganda.”

In 2008, then-U.S. Attorney Thomas O’Brien apparently broke new ground when he unveiled in Los Angeles a wide-ranging indictment of 79 Mongols for a variety of offenses. As part of his campaign, O’Brien sought the Mongols’ trademarks.

“If the court grants our request . . . then if any law enforcement officer sees a Mongol wearing his patch, he will be authorized to stop that gang member and literally take the jacket right off his back,” O’Brien said at the time.

The two trademarks cover the stylized name “Mongols” as well as the figure of a motorcycle rider wielding a sword. All but two of the original 79 defendants were eventually convicted.

A federal court, though, rejected the initial trademark forfeiture effort and ordered the Justice Department to pay $253,206 in legal fees to the attorneys who challenged it. Prosecutors returned with a new indictment of the Mongol Nation, which they described as a distinct legal entity.

A trial judge dismissed the Mongol Nation indictment last September, without getting to the potential trademark forfeiture issue, prompting the Justice Department to appeal.

If the Justice Department now succeeds in reviving the indictment, and eventually wins the criminal case, the trademark forfeiture issue roars back into play.

A recent study that was conducted by the University of Chicago’s Crime Lab has learned that Chicago criminals do not acquire their guns from gun shops, gun shows or the internet.

The study examined and interviewed inmates in Chicago’s Cook County Jail who are either facing current gun charges, or have a background consisting of firearms related convictions.

The study learned that virtually zero criminals have ever used the internet or gun shows, because that method is easily traceable. It’s much safer for a criminal to acquire firearms on the streets where they’re harder to keep track of, and that’s most criminals method of choice.

Furthermore, University of Chicago Crime lab co-director, Harold Pollack, said that criminals “were less concerned about getting caught by the cops than being put in the position of not having a gun to defend themselves and then getting shot.”

Breitbart News reported: 

The vast majority of the inmates used handguns to commit their crimes or protect themselves, very few cited using “military-style assault weapons.” And they said their habit was to get rid of a gun after one year because of the “legal liability” of being caught with a gun that could be linked to crimes they or others committed.”
As for specifics regarding sources for purchasing guns, some of the inmates indicated that gangs have individuals with a Firearm Owners Identification Card who buy guns then sell them to gang members. Others indicated using “corrupt cops” who seize guns then “put them back on the street.”

So as it turns out, the study proves what gun rights groups have been saying all along. Gun-grabbers advocating for universal background checks are barking up the wrong tree. They’re nothing more than smoke and mirrors; a colossal waste of time that only inconveniences the law-abiding citizen.

Local agents put on a “digital mask” and pose as “members of the community,” allowing them to gather personal information about suspects they consider a high risk of being involved in a future crime or have existing charges.

In a social media guide for law enforcement officials published by the Justice Department, the document details, officers create fraudulent profiles even though Facebook officially bans the practice.

Departments are also beginning to use predictive analytical policing software, allowing authorities to patrol local neighborhoods based on social networking posts. If people are emotionally upset and publish it on social media networks, the software program labels the neighborhood high risk alerting law enforcement to occupy those areas.

In a recent article published by Business Insider one police officer answered a LexisNexis survey that he “was looking for a suspect related to drug charges for over a month. When I looked him up on Facebook and requested him as a friend from a fictitious profile, he accepted,” and “he kept ‘checking in’ everywhere he went, so I was able to track him down very easily.”

Another respondent wrote, “Social media is a valuable tool because you are able to see the activities of a target in his comfortable stage. Targets brag and post … information in reference to travel, hobbies, places visited, appointments, circle of friends, family members, relationships, actions, etc.”

Out of 1,221 federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies that use social media today, more than 80% of the responding officials said social media was a powerful tool for crime-fighting and that “creating personas or profiles on social media outlets for use in law enforcement activities is ethical.”

The NYPD has even gone to the extreme to use photos of young attractive women on Facebook to spy on gang members, the New York Times reported.

No one seems to know if agencies use these photos with or without the consent of the person photographed.

Bradley Shear, an attorney and expert in social media and the law, is not quite sure how the justice system will handle challenges made to this style of policing. However, noting that “police often pose as prostitutes or drug dealers to catch criminals.”

How to identify a fake user account on Facebook.

    Account was made recently 2015, 2016.
    Account has no history published for earlier years, but Facebook says they have been a member since 2009, etc.
    Most fake accounts have 1 image or no real profile photo of the person. Some may only have a select few photos over a long span of time. A well seasoned user would have more photos posted over a long period of time. A fake account may have 7-10 photos posted on the same day.
    User has very few friends in common and or friends in general.
    There is little to no interaction on their page with friends, no comments, likes or responses over their long time line.
    Profile picture seems to good to be true, that hot model added you today! They even messaged you and are interested in you!
    When in doubt use reverse image search. Take their image and see if it is a real person or not.
    When in doubt deny, deny, deny.

Is Something BIG Coming? Report: FEMA Just Quietly Activated Civilian Corps

The Daily Sheeple received this email tip from a source who received a message warning that FEMA just quietly activated it’s “hush hush” Civilian Corps last week.

The message began with, “That was the very odd message about FEMA that came into my spam box at work.”

The message is titled, “FEMA activates it’s hush hush Civilian Corps, why now?”

It reads:

    Shalom,

    We received reports last week of various employees, citizens and etc. heading down to Atlanta Georgia to either the CDC (Center for Disease Control) and the Center for Community Preparedness (FEMA).

    As far as we can tell it is true. One girl we spoke with actually gave a cover story for her absence and flight into ATL. We believe Federal Emergency Management Agency is actually activating its Civilian Corps. This is primarily a group of current and former government and military people, many with various training backgrounds to broad to cover here. [SIC]

    While this group is unarmed, they are generally drafted from the fighting branches of the US Military, medical and communications. We were informed that several companies in Minnesota responded large numbers of their own veterans heading south. Only the families we asked confirmed where they were going and why. Few spoke to us without agreeing to anonymity.

    Why is this an issue? Should it concern you?

    YES! If you know anything about these guys, they are basis of Tom Clancy’s novel ‘The Division’. This is a real group of actual people, not some made up branch or etc. For FEMA to pull in it’s entire Civilian Corps to Atlanta last week for training means that something big is about to go down in the United States. While we can confirm, none of the people we spoke with gave us a straight answer. This is highly concerning. [emphasis added]

    At this time, FEMA is denying the news.

    Anyway, that’s the story as we know it.

Thoughts? Is something big about to go down in the U.S. or is this just a normal training situation? Seems like strange timing, right before Bilderberg and, coincidentally or not, right before what our government and mainstream media are reporting as the worst mass shooting in American history in Orlando (although it is not, there have been many worse mass shootings dating back to Indian massacres all the way up to the Waco massacre).

Is FEMA and Homeland Security preparing for something to go down that the rest of us are blissfully unaware of?

Once again, this is proof we need to be prepared either way.

Every year or so, the Commanding General of Camp Pendleton in San Diego County issues a general order that lists “outlaw motorcycle gangs” the command staff believes pose “a criminal and security threat; inhibits the mission” of the base; “interfere with the loyalty, morale, good order, and discipline of” Camp Pendleton; “and discredit the reputation of the installation and the United States Marine Corps.”

The order “applies to all persons aboard MCB CamPen to include: military personnel, Department of Defense (DoD) civilian personnel, contractors, vendors, community pass holders, and any other customers, guests, or visitors.” The order forbids the display of insignia or other indicators of membership or support for the blacklisted clubs. The order doesn’t mention whether membership or support for the clubs might jeopardize civilian employment at Camp Pendleton.

The general order was distributed on June 30. The current list was assembled on May 16 by Charles Warmuth, the Special Agent in Charge of the Naval Criminal Investigative Service Marine Corps West Field Office.

The List
According to Warmuth, the motorcycle clubs on the list are “criminal organizations or MCs that are closely aligned with criminal organizations such that they pose an immediate risk to the safety and integrity of the USMC and USN. MCs closely aligned with known criminal organizations are referred to as support clubs. Support clubs also participate in criminal activities as members are typically required to financially support MC criminal organizations by carrying out tasks, usually in the form of criminal acts, on behalf of that criminal organization.”

Warmuth explains, “The information supporting listing the below MCs is the product of coordination with the San Diego Sheriffs Department, The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (BATFE), and the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s (FBI) Gang Threat Assessment.”
