Rhode island - Loud pipes a no-no

OFF THE WIRE

As a motorcyclist and lover of all things reckless, this may sound surprising, but I am wholly in support of increased enforcement of overly loud exhausts.
While I enjoy these sounds at the racetrack or even on the highway, I loathe it when these knuckleheads act with such deafening disrespect in residential neighbourhoods and in city centres.
Opponents to such laws often cite the anecdotal principal that "loud pipes save lives," suggesting they alert drivers to their presence and thus represent a safety feature.
Having spent considerable time riding a quiet motorcycle, I find this principle very difficult to believe. Furthermore, it seems somewhat ironic that the motorcyclists who use this argument are the same ones who choose to wear the smallest helmets and often very little other protective clothing.
