DAV: February 2013 Newsletter

OFF THE WIRE

We all have a place in our heart for America’s wounded heroes. And this month marks a fitting time to show our love for them and the country they defended on our behalf.

Thank you for continuing to value the courageous men and women who served in our armed forces. With gratitude and affection, we remember the heroes whose sacrifices paid the price for our way of life!

Hearing Loss: War’s Most Common Impact
Hearing Loss   The most common impact of military service, hearing loss (including tinnitus), affects one in four veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. These problems affect the quality of veterans’ lives now, and the effects will only grow worse as the years go by.

Number of Homeless Veterans Dropping
Homeless Veterans Dropping   According to recent data, the number of homeless veterans has dropped by 17% since 2009, largely as a result of determined action by the government and nonprofit organizations, including the DAV Charitable Service Trust. Yet the DAV still worries about our youngest veterans and women who served.

Camp Offers Healing, Friendship for Wounded
Camp Offers Healing   Camp Hope revives the love of outdoor pursuits in a therapeutic setting for veterans. Using life insurance from the military after losing a Marine son in Iraq, a mother and father developed the camp in Missouri as a rehabilitative experience in honor of Christopher Neal White.

DAV Volunteers Come to the Rescue After Fire
DAV Volunteers   Four DAV chapters pooled funds to help cover a new home down payment and furniture costs when Vietnam vet Clifford Woods and his family lost their home in a fire. It’s another shining example of local DAV chapters in action during moments of great need.

Stunning Women Veterans’ Memorial Turns 15
Memorial Turns 15   The only major national memorial that honors solely women veterans recently celebrated its 15th anniversary at Arlington National Cemetery. Many choose this inspirational spot as their backdrop for photos as they capture landmark moments in their military careers.

Heroic Hearts Deserve Your Support!
Donate Now   The veterans who gave so much of their lives in service to this country richly merit the support you’ve already given, yet so much more needs to be done as we conclude our combat role in Afghanistan.

As we move toward a postwar period that may be filled with forgetful hearts, you’ll keep those great and urgent needs in your heart as you make a generous gift of $25 … $50 … $100 or more now.
