CA - REGION: CHP ups patrols for Labor Day weekend

OFF THE WIRE
The California Highway Patrol plans to step up enforcement over Labor Day weekend, cracking down on drunken drivers, speeders and other unsafe motorists, officials said Tuesday.
The agency will put added patrols on state roads from Friday through Monday, according to a CHP statement.
On the same weekend last year, 29 people died in traffic collisions statewide ---- an increase of 38 percent over the previous year. Nineteen of the fatal crash victims were not wearing seat belts, the statement said.
The CHP arrests about 1,500 individuals for impaired driving every Labor Day weekend, the statement said.
