Motorcycle safety bill passed by Senate

MONDAY, JUNE 4, 2012

A bill cosponsored by state Sen. Patricia A. Ritchie, R-Heuvelton, that would improve motorcycle safety by including awareness training in the state Department of Motor Vehicles required courses has passed unanimously in the Senate.
The bill would amend the Vehicle and Traffic Law to create a motorcycle safety and awareness component to the required five-hour driving course. Its creation was spurred by the recent increase in motorcycle-related accidents in the north country. In this year alone, accidents have taken the lives of four motorcyclists in Oswego County.
“This is just one more step towards making our highways safer for both motorcyclists and those traveling on four wheels,” Mrs. Ritchie said of the bill in a released statement. “By teaching people how to properly share the road, we can cut down on accidents and help save lives.”
