In 1918 during World War I, the Germans pushed through the French lines and adva...nced to Belleau Wood. Marines dug shallow fighting positions and were ordered to not let the Germans pass through. For 20 days, the Marines held their ground through machine gun fire and heavy casualties, eventually pushing the Germans out of Belleau Wood. The Marines demonstrated their tenacity and superior marksmanship abilities, earning themselves a German nickname: Teufelhunden, or “Devil Dogs.”
