AUSTRALIA - Bikie father made speed: court told

OFF THE WIRE
JY Hawes, facing an eight-year prison sentence, told Newcastle District Court yesterday how he grew up in a home where bedrooms were used for manufacturing amphetamines and growing cannabis.
His barrister, Paul Rosser QC, said if there was one way a parent could steer their children into drug dealing then the upbringing that Hawes, 23, and his brother Zac, 22, had was it.
Jy previously pleaded guilty to supplying a large commercial quantity of methylamphetamine while Zac and their friend Peter Gwynne pleaded guilty to lesser charges including supplying drugs and dealing with the proceeds of crime.
Jy, formerly of Argenton, was the target of a seven-month investigation into the supply of methylamphetamine, steroids and cannabis in the Lake Macquarie area between December 2009 and June 2010.
Jy alone supplied or tried to supply a total of 2.5 kilograms of methylamphetamine during that time.
Judge Robert Toner, who will formally sentence the trio next week, indicated that he would jail Jy for eight years with a non-parole period of five years while Zac, formerly of Rathmines, can expect to be released next week after serving about 20 months.
Gwynne, 24, of Blackalls Park, will be jailed for two years with a non-parole period of one year, Judge Toner said.
Jy Hawes confirmed that his parents separated when he was about six and that he and his brother lived with their father Larry where their home was an amphetamine and cannabis drug lab, the court heard.
Larry Hawes previously received a suspended jail sentence for drugs charges.
Jy said he started smoking cannabis when he was 10 and took amphetamines from age 13.
While his father was a member of the Comancheros bikie gxxg Jy said he accumulated a $30,000 drug debt to another bikie gxxg and had only paid half of it off by the time he was arrested in June 2010.
