Police arrested 212 people on suspicion of driving under the influence and reported one DUI-related death during extra weekend patrols, up from last year's 196 drunken-driving arrests during the same period, authorities said.
The arrests resulted from special patrols Friday through Sunday conducted countywide, according to a statement from the San Diego County Sheriff's Department. More DUI patrols and checkpoints are scheduled for this week.
Checkpoints are scheduled in Poway and Oceanside on Friday. Extra patrols were also scheduled countywide for Friday and Saturday, the statement said.
The extra enforcement will continue through New Year's Day, according to the sheriff's department.
