Police are preparing for a two-month operation involving motorcycles in the Western Bay of Plenty. The joint operation is being run by police, ACC and the NZ Transport Agency.
Police are working to improve rider safety in a new campaign.
The operation will focus on warrant of fitness and registration, with police encouraging riders to be highly visible all hours of the day and night.
Sergeant Wayne Hunter says riders refuse to wear high visibility vests because they don’t look cool.
Wayne says the biggest problem is riders take it for granted that everyone can see them.
He says bikers are less likely to be involved in an accident if they are wearing a high visibility vest.
Earlier this year a motorcyclist was killed at night time in a crash on State Highway 2, near Te Mete Road in Te Puna.

The rider of this bike died when he was in a collision with a car this year.
A Nissan Maxima was turning right into State Highway 2 and collided with the Harley Davidson.
The rider died at the scene of the crash.
