San Jose police said Saturday night they had "credible evidence" that a Hells Angel suspected of shooting fellow Angel Steve Tausan to death during a biker funeral in October was spotted in San Jose.
Police said Steve Ruiz, 38, had been sighted in the city in the past 24 hours, the first public revelation about his whereabouts since the manhunt began two months ago. But as of late Saturday, police did not know Ruiz's exact whereabouts, said police spokesman Jose Garcia.
Ruiz is suspected of shooting Tausan to death at San Jose's Oak Hill Cemetery, where members of the outlaw motorcycle club were gathered Oct. 15 for a memorial for San Jose Hells Angel President Jeff "Jethro" Pettigrew.
Pettigrew had been shot and killed in September in a Nevada casino, allegedly by a member of the rival Vagos motorcycle gang.
Ruiz fled the cemetery and has been on the lam. He had been traveling in a pewter-colored GMC Yukon and an older Toyota 4-Runner, but police said they were uncertain if he's still using those vehicles.
In late October, police descended on a suburban Stockton home where San Jose police believed Ruiz was hiding out. But a search came up empty.
Police said Ruiz, who should be considered armed and dangerous, has ties in Gilroy, Campbell and Fremont.
Those with information on his whereabouts are asked to call Detective Brian Spears at 408-277-5283 or dial 911.
