A police officer involved in a steroid drug gang admitted using his job to provide secret intelligence to a man charged with gun crimes.
Detective Constable Paul David Fletcher briefed the accused on what police tactics would be used against him and how he could frustrate the inquiry.
He also told the man who was on bail at the time, that another criminal had got a lenient sentence because he was a police informer.
The story of 46-year-old Fletcher's shame was told at Liverpool Crown Court where he pleaded guilty to three offences of misconduct in a public office.
He was one of two officers who also admitted being part of a gang involved in supplying steroids.
Fletcher, of Downall Green Road, Ashton, had previously denied all the charges and was due to stand trial on November 15, but he changed his plea yesterday at a pre-trial hearing.
He also admitted a total of six offences of being concerned in the supply of controlled drugs between December 4, 2010, and February 2, this year.
Five of the charges involved Fletcher being involved in supplying the drugs, including human growth hormone and testosterone to an undercover officers known only as 'Neil.'
In the final charge Fletcher admitted being involved in the supply of class C drugs to fellow St Helens policeman, 43-year-old Sgt Paul Hornby.
Guilty: Steroid drug gang member Terry Bridge
Next to the two officers in the dock was Fletcher's son Paul Michael Fletcher.
The 26-year-old, of Richmond Hill, Wigan, had previously admitted six offences of supplying a controlled drug - on five occasions to the undercover officer 'Neil' and once to Hornby.
His cousin Carl Fletcher, 28, of Old Road, in Ashton-in-Makerfield, has admitted possessing class C drugs with intent to supply.
A fifth man in the dock, Terry Bridge, 23, also changed his pleas and admitted being involved in selling human growth hormone to Hornby.
On an earlier occasion he had pleaded guilty to possessing numerous controlled drugs with intent to supply.
Bridge, of Poplar Avenue, Wigan, admitted having a total of 19 different drugs, including a variety of testosterone substances and diazepam.
Mr Justice Henriques fixed sentencing on all the men for November 21.
