MAINE - Conviction vacated for ex-head of Maine biker gang

OFF THE WIRE
PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — Prosecutors have until Sept. 29 to decide whether to seek a hearing following an appeals court ruling that set aside the drug conspiracy convictions of the former president of the Maine chapter of the Iron Horsemen motorcycle gxxg and his co-defendant.

The 1st District U.S. Court of Appeals in Boston this month vacated the convictions of Richard "Zip" Szypt and Ramon Dellosantos, who were convicted in 2009 of conspiring to distribute cocaine. Szypt, who headed the Maine chapter of the Iron Horsemen in Old Orchard Beach, was sentenced to life in prison. Dellosantos got 10 years.

The appeals court ruled the evidence presented at trial did not support the charge in the indictment. Both men remain in jail.
