DAV: September 2011 Newsletter

OFF THE WIRE
Dear Philip,
It’s been a time of unease and uncertainty for America’s heroes as essential programs, services and benefits for disabled veterans face the prospect of being cut.
As the DAV confronts continued threats against veterans who sacrificed their blood and their health for America, I’m so grateful that you support the leader in America’s drive to help our sick and wounded heroes!
Fighting for Those Who Fought for Us!
Arthur H. Wilson, National Adjutant
Disabled American Veterans

DAV Looks to the Future for Disabled Vets  Determined to cut federal spending, deficit hawks are eager to shirk the continuing cost of war by curbing care for disabled veterans. The DAV is left fighting to preserve health care and other benefits these men and women need to live their lives. “No one is thinking about the lifetime costs this country is responsible for,” laments Senator Patty Murray.

VA Secretary Pledges Support at DAV Convention  Disabled veterans from every corner of America convened at the recent DAV national convention to decide what goals they want their organization to pursue in the year ahead. Addressing the delegates, VA Secretary Eric Shinseki pledged to keep faith with those disabled in our nation’s defense.
Volunteers Drive DAV’s Mission Across State Lines  From 5:45 a.m. to 6 p.m., DAV vans ferry vets from Superior, Wisconsin, to the VA clinic in Minneapolis. It’s a big commitment for DAV volunteers, yet one local DAV leader insists it’s not too much for vets who wrote “a blank check payable to the U.S. government for any amount up to and including their life.”
Donation Helps Local Chapter Purchase Van  After working for three years to collect funds for a new van to assist local veterans, DAV Chapter 59 received a generous gift from a donor that answered their prayers. Says donor Sarah Williamson, “I saw that old van parked near the police station and it just looked beat up. They really needed a new one.”
Sports Clinic – More Than Just a Good Time
Skiing, snowboarding, hockey and other activities at the Winter Sports Clinic may be big confidence builders — and big fun — for disabled vets. But thanks to data that researchers collect at the DAV co-sponsored clinic, the event also helps shape technologies that will improve the lives of disabled vets.
Bidding Farewell to Executive Director David Gorman
David Gorman will be remembered as “one of the premiere veterans’ advocates of all time,” says the DAV’s Art Wilson. After sacrificing both legs in Vietnam, Dave spent 40 years advocating for disabled veterans and their families through the DAV. As his legacy endures, the DAV’s work marches on.
